If you have an Ubuntu installation and want to use Oracle jDeveloper, this article describes one way to install.

My Ubuntu version is 12.04, jDeveloper version 11.1.2.4.0
[download the Generic (.jar) version from
Oracle.com ]

Step 1jDeveloper uses the Oracle JDK 7, thus the openJDK 7 is not needed:

sudo apt-get purge openjdk*

Step 2, the easiest way is to install via ppa, add the ppa of webupd8team

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

Step 3, update your package list

sudo apt-get update

Step 4, (final step to install JDK), install the Oracle java 7 JDK

sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

More information about installing Oracle JDK 7 can be found here: webupd8.org

Step 5, check your java version

java -version

It should display something like: java version "1.7.0_nn"

Step 6, install jDeveloper (launch the installer)

java -jar jdevstudio11124install.jar

Step 7, follow the installer instructions, have some patience and jDeveloper will be installed.

Good luck and enjoy!
